Barn Kelp is an outer-exposed kelp reef off Santa Monica, California, where kelp-covered bottom runs from 20 to 60 feet. The reef holds a broad mix of species through the year, with California Halibut and White Seabass peaking March through July, Yellowtail from May into October, and Calico Bass building April through August. As the seasons turn, California Barracuda and California Sheephead run April through September, while Lingcod come on strong September through February over the same rocky structure. Anglers work the kelp edges and reef with plastics like swimbaits and soft plastic grubs for Calico Bass, live sardines and mackerel for Yellowtail, and drift fishing live anchovies or sardines across the sand-and-reef margins for halibut. For Lingcod and Sheephead, vertical jigging with metal jigs and bottom fishing with squid or cut mackerel put baits down among the deeper rock at the reef's outer limits.
