Discovery Island

Discovery Island sits off Victoria's southeastern tip in DFO subarea 19-4, a rocky corridor on the outer exposed coast where tidal currents sweep between the island group and the mainland shore. The structure holds Pacific Halibut through their March to August peak and Lingcod across a split window from November to March and again April through June, with Kelp Greenling resident on the reef and Chinook Salmon moving through from June to August. Working depths run 25 to 115 feet, with the rocky bottom and current edges concentrating fish along pinnacles, ledges, and drop-offs. Tidal exchange here is strong, and the bite windows track slack and the early stages of the flood and ebb. Exposure to southerly and easterly weather shapes which faces of the corridor fish best on any given day.
