Hunts Inlet is a sheltered bight on the northeast side of Porcher Island, southwest of Prince Rupert, with fishable water running from 30 to 120 feet over mixed rock and gravel bottom. Pacific Halibut hold on the deeper edges and peak from April through August, while Chinook Salmon push through in two waves from February to April and again April to July, followed by Coho Salmon building from May into September. Anglers work the shallower troughs and current seams with downrigger trolling for Chinook and Coho, running whole herring, anchovy in a teaser head, trolling spoons, and hootchies behind flashers along the tide lines. For halibut, drift jigging with leadhead jigs and heavy metal jigs covers the 80 to 120 foot bottom, with bait fishing on anchor using whole herring, salmon heads, or octopus as a supporting approach on slack water. Tidal exchange through the inlet concentrates bait against the points, which draws Coho within casting range for spoons and metal jigs late in the season.
