Nine Mile Bank is an outer, exposed kelp reef over rocky bottom off Santa Monica, California, with depths running 20 to 80 feet. The reef holds Yellowtail from May through October and draws warm-water pelagics through summer, including Dorado (June–September), Yellowfin Tuna (June–October), Albacore Tuna (June–October), and Pacific Bluefin Tuna (April–September), while Lingcod turn on from September into February and Vermilion/Sunset Rockfish stay catchable year-round. Yellowtail come on live sardines, mackerel, and anchovies, or on yo-yo and surface iron worked over the rock structure. Dorado gather on kelp paddies and take live sardines, live anchovies, and surface iron, while the tuna respond to trolled cedar plugs and feather jigs or live bait on the same exposed water. Along the deeper rock, Lingcod fall to vertical jigging with metal and leadhead jigs, and rockfish come off deep-dropped squid strips, shrimp flies, and anchovy.
