Sidney Spit

Sidney Spit is a mid-exposure sand flat off Sidney, British Columbia, within DFO subarea 19-5, where the bottom runs from about 5 to 50 feet. The flat holds Chinook Salmon through their June to August peak and Coho Salmon from May into September, alongside Chum salmon, resident Pacific Herring, and Flounder or Sole working the sand. Chinook respond to downrigger trolling with anchovy in a teaser head, trolling spoons, or flashers, while Coho come to trolled spoons, hootchies, and cut-plug herring across the shallower edges. Chum favor trolling with green flashers and green hoochies, and both salmon can be worked with metal jigs when fish stack over structure. Dungeness Crab share the same sand bottom and take crab traps or ring nets baited with herring, clams, or fish carcasses.
