Sturgeon Bank

Sturgeon Bank is a broad sand flat off Vancouver's Fraser River delta, sitting inside protected inner waters within DFO subarea 29-10. The bank runs shallow, roughly 5 to 50 feet, and its soft bottom holds Dungeness Crab through the summer peak from June to September. Chinook Salmon move across the edges from June to August, followed by Coho Salmon that stay active into September. Crabbers work baited traps with salmon heads, herring, or fish carcasses set on the flat, while salmon anglers cover water with downrigger trolling using anchovy in teaser heads, hootchies, flashers, and trolling spoons. Mooching cut plug herring and casting metal jigs or small spoons also produce when fish stack near the drop-offs on tide changes.
