Portland Island sits off Sidney, British Columbia, within DFO subarea 18-6, a mixed-bottom bay with moderate exposure and depths running from 15 to 80 feet. Lingcod hold over the structure through the winter, peaking from November to March, while Chinook Salmon move through from June to August and Coho Salmon spread across a longer window from May to September. Rockfish stay present across the mixed bottom year-round, giving anglers a target in every season. Jigging with metal jigs, swimbaits, or soft plastics works the deeper mixed bottom for lingcod and rockfish, and downrigger trolling with anchovy in a teaser head, spoons, or flashers covers the water column for Chinook as they pass through. The bay's mid-range exposure and 15-to-80-foot spread let boats work both the shallows and the deeper edges depending on where the fish are staging.
