Smith Island is an inner-protected rock drop-off off Santa Monica, California, where the bottom falls through depths of 10 to 40 feet. The structure holds Barred Sand Bass, which peak in March and again from June through August, alongside California Halibut from March through July and California Sheephead from April through September. Drift fishing with live anchovies, live sardines, or plastic swimbaits works the sand and rock edges for sand bass and halibut, while bottom fishing with live shrimp, squid, or cut mackerel pulls sheephead off the harder structure. As the season turns, Lingcod move in from September through February and respond to vertical jigging with metal jigs or leadhead jigs rigged with swimbaits. White Seabass push through in spring on live squid and sardines, and Mackerel stack up in summer for sabiki rigs along the drop.
