STRUCTURE

Bird Rock sits off Santa Monica, California, a rocky reef and kelp structure fishing from 10 to 80 feet of water. Yellowtail move through from May to October and respond to live bait such as sardines, mackerel, and anchovies, while White Seabass peak from March to July on live squid and sardines worked over the deeper edges. The reef and kelp hold Calico Bass from April to August, best targeted with swimbaits and soft plastic grubs, and California Sheephead from April to September on bottom rigs baited with live shrimp, squid, or cut mackerel. Barred Sand Bass show over the sandier stretches from March and again June through August, taken on drift fishing with live anchovies, sardines, or plastic swimbaits. As the water cools, Lingcod take over from September into February, holding tight to structure where vertical jigging with metal jigs or leadhead jigs and swimbaits reaches them near the bottom.
