La Jolla Canyon is an outer-exposed drop-off off San Diego, where a rocky bottom plunges from roughly 100 to 600 feet along the canyon edge. The structure draws pelagic predators including Yellowfin tuna and Albacore Tuna, both peaking from June through October, alongside Shortfin Mako Shark, Bigeye tuna, Opah, Pacific swordfish, Broadnose Sevengill Shark, and Cowcod. Yellowfin respond to live bait such as sardines, anchovies, and mackerel, with trolling cedar plugs, feather jigs, and skirted lures working the surface over the deeper water. Albacore take the same live baits and hold to trolled spreads or heavy surface jigs along the exposed rim. The sharp depth transition concentrates fish where the canyon wall meets open water, making the edge the focus over the flatter surrounding bottom.
