Isthmus Reef sits off Santa Monica, California, a rocky structure rising through waters that run 10 to 75 feet deep. Yellowtail move through from May to October and respond to live bait such as sardines, mackerel, and anchovies, while White Seabass peak from March to July and take live squid or sardines fished close to the reef. The rocks hold California Sheephead and Ocean Whitefish through the spring and summer months, both worked effectively with dropper loop rigs baited with squid or cut mackerel along the bottom. Calico Bass fill in from April to August and hit swimbaits and soft plastics fished tight to the structure, and California Barracuda run the same window, tracked with trolled tube lures and spoons. As the water cools from September into February, Lingcod take over the deeper rock, where vertical jigging with metal jigs and leadhead swimbaits draws them off the bottom.
