STRUCTURE

The Malibu Kelp and Point Dume area sits along Santa Monica Bay off Santa Monica, California, where rocky reef, kelp beds, and structure run from 20 to 120 feet of water. White Seabass peaks March through July and responds to live bait fishing with live squid, sardines, or mackerel, while California Halibut drift the same spring window on live anchovies and sardines. Calico Bass hold tight to the kelp from April through August and take swimbaits and soft plastic grubs worked on leadhead jigs, and California Sheephead work the reef bottom April through September on squid and cut mackerel. Yellowtail and Pacific Bonito move through the warmer months, with Yellowtail biting live sardines and mackerel from May through October and Bonito responding to live bait chumming from May through September. Rockfish stay available year-round over the deeper structure on dropper loops baited with squid and cut mackerel, and Lingcod fill the cooler September-through-February stretch on vertical jigs.
