Johns Pass runs through the rocky corridor near Johns Island in the San Juans off Friday Harbor, a mid-exposure channel where the bottom holds structure across depths of 40 to 120 feet. Lingcod concentrate here through the winter run of December to February and again from May to August, while aggregate rockfish hold over the rock from March through September. Anglers work the corridor primarily by jigging, dropping metal jigs, leadhead jigs with swimbaits, or bucktail jigs to the rocky bottom where both species stage. Live bait drifting with greenling, herring, or sanddabs adds a second approach for lingcod along the deeper edges of the pass. Mooching whole or cut plug herring covers the water column when fish move off the rock through moving tide.
