277 Bank is an outer, exposed offshore drop-off south of San Diego, where a mixed bottom rises and falls through depths of 180 to 300 feet. The structure draws bluefin tuna at their peak from May through September and yellowfin tuna from June through October, alongside dorado from July through October and yellowtail from July through September. Bluefin here respond to kite fishing with flying fish, live mackerel, or yummy flyer, with flylining live sardines and anchovies or working knife jigs and flat-fall jigs down along the drop as supporting approaches. Yellowfin come to live sardines and anchovies over the same broken bottom, while dorado hold near kelp paddies drifting across the bank and take live bait or surface iron. Striped marlin, bigeye tuna, blue shark, and mako shark also range across this outer water through the warmer months.
