Lasuen Knoll, known to many as the 227 Spot, is an offshore rise off San Diego at 33.2700, -118.0700 where the bottom ranges from 180 to 400 feet of water. The structure holds a strong aggregate rockfish population that peaks across the year, along with lingcod that concentrate from October through February and ocean whitefish through the warmer months from March to October. Anglers work the deeper rock with dropper loop bait fishing using squid, mackerel strips, and anchovies for rockfish, while vertical jigging with heavy iron jigs and swimbaits on lead heads targets lingcod holding tight to the harder bottom. California sheephead move onto the shallower edges of the knoll from July through September and respond to bottom fishing with live shrimp, squid strips, and rock crab. Ocean whitefish take dropper loop presentations of squid and cut mackerel through the same deep structure, making the site a consistent stop for bottom-dwelling species across the depth range.
