Del Mar Kelp is an outer, exposed sand flat off Newport Beach, dropping through depths of 580 to 910 feet. The spot draws California Halibut through their March to May peak and White Seabass from February into June, with Calico Bass filling in from April to August and Barred Sand Bass concentrating from May to July. Halibut respond to drifting live bait such as live anchovies, sardines, and queenfish across the open sand, while White Seabass come to live squid, sardines, and mackerel worked over the same bottom. Calico Bass take plastic swimbaits and paddletail plastics cast across the flat, and Barred Sand Bass hold to drift fishing with live baits and squid strips. California Sheephead, Cabezon, and Leopard Shark round out the mix through their respective seasons, worked on bottom rigs with squid strips, shrimp, and cut baits.
