The Palos Verdes Kelp Beds sit off the Southern California coast, where dense kelp forests grow over rocky reef and structure in water running 20 to 100 feet deep. Yellowtail move through from May to October and respond to live bait like sardines, mackerel, and anchovies, while calico bass hold tight to the kelp from April to August and take swimbaits, soft plastic grubs, and leadhead jigs. White seabass work the beds from March to July on live squid and sardines, and rockfish stay catchable year-round on dropper loops baited with squid or cut mackerel along the deeper rock. California sheephead and lingcod add bottom-fishing options, sheephead peaking April through September over the reef and lingcod holding from September into February on vertical jigs. Working the edges of the kelp and the reef breaks concentrates fish across the depth range, with the shallower structure producing bass and the deeper rock giving up rockfish, whitefish, and lingcod.
