STRUCTURE

Long Point sits off the rocky Palos Verdes coastline where the bottom drops through 20 to 120 feet of reef, kelp, and hard structure. Pacific Halibut move onto the drifts from February through May, best worked by drifting live anchovies or sardines, while White Seabass peak from March through July and respond to live squid and sardines fished on the bait. Calico Bass fill the kelp edges from April through August, taking swimbaits and soft plastic grubs on leadheads, and California Sheephead hold to the rocks from April through September for anglers dropping live shrimp, squid, or crab to the bottom. The reef supports a year-round Rockfish mix on the dropper loop with squid or cut mackerel, and Lingcod stack up over the deeper structure from September through February, where vertical jigging with metal jigs or leadhead swimbaits draws strikes. Cabezon and California Scorpionfish round out the cool-season bottom fishing, with Cabezon best from September through April on shrimp flies and squid-tipped jigs.
