Florida saltwater fishing license, 2026
Florida licenses salt and fresh water separately, and it is generous with exemptions: residents 65 and older need none, a licensed pier or charter covers you, and residents fishing from land can take a free shoreline license. Off a boat, FWC sells an annual saltwater license plus permits for snook, lobster and offshore reef fish. This page works out which pieces you need.
Last checked 29 October 2026 against the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. An annual license is valid for 12 months from the date it is issued.
What age do you need a Florida fishing license?
You need a Florida saltwater fishing license from age 16.
Anglers under 16 need no license. FWC writes license. The same document is often called a fishing licence. The free State Reef Fish Angler designation is also required from age 16 to fish reef fish such as gag and red snapper from a private boat.
Do seniors need a Florida fishing license?
Florida residents aged 65 or older need no fishing license.
Carry a Florida driver's license or ID card that shows your age and residency, or the free Resident 65+ Hunting and Fishing Certificate. A non-resident 65 or older still pays $47.00 a year, or buys a short-term license. The State Reef Fish Angler designation has no exemptions, so a senior fishing reef fish from a boat still needs it.
Do kids need a fishing license in Florida?
No: anglers under 16 need no Florida fishing license.
FWC sells an optional resident youth saltwater license for ages 8 to 15. Bag limits, size limits and closed seasons still apply to a child.
Do you need a separate saltwater fishing license in Florida?
Yes: Florida sells separate saltwater and freshwater licenses, and Tampa Bay and the Gulf need the saltwater one.
A Florida resident fishing from land, or a structure fixed to land, can use the free shoreline license instead. It is not valid from a boat. Nobody needs a license on a pier that holds its own saltwater pier license, or on a licensed charter boat.
What does a Florida saltwater fishing license cost?
A resident pays $17.00 for an annual saltwater license, and a non-resident pays $47.00.
An annual license is valid for 12 months from the date it is issued. Visitors can buy a three-day license for $17.00 or a seven-day license for $30.00. The snook and spiny lobster permits cost extra.
Where do you buy a Florida fishing license?
Buy it online at GoOutdoorsFlorida, at a county tax collector's office, or from a license agent such as a tackle shop.
The tarpon tag is sold only at tax collector offices. The State Reef Fish Angler designation is added free wherever you buy the license.

Permits and the reef fish designation
A permit rides on top of a license you already hold. Without the right one your license is valid and you still aren’t allowed to keep the fish. The reef fish designation is the one Tampa Bay boat anglers most often miss.
State Reef Fish Angler designation
- Annual
- Free
Required for anglers 16 and older fishing for certain reef fish, including gag, red grouper, red snapper, gray triggerfish and amberjack, from a private boat. Free, but there are no exemptions: you need it even when you need no license.
Snook permit
- Annual
- $10.00
- Five-year, residents
- $50.00
Needed to keep a snook, on top of the saltwater license. Snook is the fish Tampa Bay's flats and passes are known for.
Spiny lobster permit
- Annual
- $5.00
- Five-year, residents
- $25.00
Needed to take spiny lobster, on top of the saltwater license.
Tarpon tag
- Annual
- $51.50
Tarpon is catch and release. The tag is only for keeping one in pursuit of a state or world record. Releasing a tarpon needs no tag. Sold at county tax collector offices.
Permits are not needed on a free fishing day. FWC: permits.
How to buy one
- Go to GoOutdoorsFlorida, visit a county tax collector’s office, or buy from a license agent such as a tackle shop or bait shop.
- Pick the license. Shore anglers who live in Florida can take the free shoreline license; anyone fishing from a boat needs the annual saltwater license.
- Add the State Reef Fish Angler designation, free, if you will fish for grouper, snapper or amberjack from a private boat.
- Add a snook permit if you want to keep a snook, and a spiny lobster permit for lobster.
- Carry it, or your proof of exemption: residents 65 and older carry a Florida driver’s license or ID.
What a license does not give you
A license is permission to participate. It says nothing about what is open today. Sitting on top of a perfectly valid license:
Size and bag limits. Red drum, snook and spotted seatrout have slot limits that differ by region, and Tampa Bay sits in its own management region.
Closed seasons. Snook closes in winter and summer, and gag and red snapper have short seasons. A valid license does not open a closed season.
Federal waters. Past nine nautical miles off the Gulf coast, federal rules set the reef fish seasons.
In-season changes. FWC and NOAA Fisheries change seasons during the year, sometimes after red tide or a cold kill.
Check current rules with FWC saltwater regulations, and browse fishing spots across Florida to see conditions and forecasts for where you are headed.
Free Fishing Days. In 2026, 6 and 7 June, 5 September and 28 November 2026, you can fish salt water without a license or permit. Bag and size limits and seasons still apply. FWC: free fishing days.
