Inner Protected

Patrician Bay is an inner-protected bay near Sidney, British Columbia, sitting over a soft mud bottom in DFO subarea 19-8 at depths of 15 to 65 feet. The sheltered water and muddy substrate support shrimp and prawn, flatfish such as flounder and sole, and Dungeness crab. Dungeness crab is the primary draw, with crab trapping worked over the mud using fish carcasses, chicken, herring, or clams as bait. Ring netting fills a supporting role for crab, baited with fish carcasses, herring, or chicken and set across the same shallow to mid-depth range. The protected exposure keeps conditions steady, making the bay a workable spot for soaking traps and rings on the bottom.
