Dungeness crab live in Sooke's waters year round, so you are never working an empty bottom. What changes is condition and how close they sit to the shallows. Three spots carry the weight here: Pedder Bay, Possession Point, and the Sooke Basin and Sooke Harbour entrance. Each holds the sand and mud bottom these crabs work, and each fishes differently depending on how hard the tide is running through it.
The strong months are March through June and September through November. Spring brings crabs inshore on pre-molt feeding and mating, so traps set on the flats and eelgrass edges pay off. Through July and August many crabs are soft and less worth hauling, then the fall run rebuilds fast as hard-shell males reoccupy the local flats and feed hard into October and November. Winter is the quiet stretch, with more adults holding deeper and off the exposed Juan de Fuca shoreline.
Crab trapping is the method. Bait your traps with chicken, turkey, herring or fish carcasses, drop them from the boat onto sand or mud in 30 to 100 feet, and give them a proper soak before hauling. Work the slack. From dead slack up to about 2 knots your gear stays where you set it. Past roughly 4.5 knots the traps drag and the set is wasted, so plan around high or low water.
When to go
Dungeness crab are resident year-round in Sooke's waters, so abundance never drops to zero. Biomass peaks late summer through early fall (Aug–Sep) after the summer molt when hard-shell legal males are most abundant, with a softer low in late winter/early spring when many crabs are soft-shelled and less catchable but still biologically present.
