Whirl Bay is an inner, protected bay near Sooke, British Columbia, where a mixed bottom ranges from 10 to 60 feet across the sheltered shallows. Pacific Halibut hold here through the spring and summer, peaking from March to August, while Chinook Salmon run strongest from June to August and Coho Salmon extend the season from June into October. Anglers work the mixed bottom for halibut with drift fishing over salmon bellies, herring, octopus, and salmon heads, and cover the same depths with leadhead or metal jigs when the drift slows. Chinook come to trolled anchovy, herring, spoons, and hootchies through the protected water, with mooching cut-plug herring an option along the deeper edges near 60 feet. Coho respond to trolling spoons, hootchies, anchovies, and flashers, and bucktail flies bring fish up in the shallower reaches of the bay.
