Dungeness crab live in Victoria's waters year round, but the crabbing gets good when the water warms. Peak months run May through September. After the spring molt the crabs harden, fill out and move into the shallower bays to feed, so June through August is when your traps come up heavy. Numbers taper through fall and winter as crabs shift deeper and shells go soft post molt, with a smaller autumn bump as juveniles grow into legal size cohorts. Males finish their summer molt and feed hard from August into October, which keeps the fall worth your time.
Four spots here hold them. Cadboro Bay and Oak Bay Flats give you the soft bottom and protected water that crabs favour. The Esquimalt Harbour Entrance and the Victoria Waterfront both fish well when you find sand or mud rather than rock. Set your traps in 40 to 120 feet and give them several hours to soak between pulls.
Current decides everything. Fish the slack. From dead slack up to about 2 knots you can set gear and expect it to sit where you drop it, and by roughly 2 knots the tide sweeps your line and the set is wasted. Work the window either side of high or low water. Round or rectangular traps both work. Bait with salmon heads, herring, chicken or fish carcasses, and use enough scent to pull crabs across open bottom.
