Outer Exposed

14 Mile Bank is an outer-exposed offshore flat off Newport Beach, California, where a mixed bottom drops through 275 to 400 feet of water. The bank draws pelagic species through the warm months, with Albacore Tuna peaking June through September and Yellowfin Tuna running from June into October, alongside Bigeye Tuna, Bonito, and Mackerel that peaks July through September. Albacore fishing centers on live bait with live sardines and anchovies, while trolling feather jigs, cedar plugs, and skirted lures covers water to locate schools, and surface iron works fish holding near the top. Mackerel come readily on sabiki rigs and small feather jigs, giving anglers a steady source of bait over the same ground. Pacific sardine shows earlier in the year, peaking February through April, and is worked with sabiki rigs and small flies.
