Newport Canyon is a deep offshore trench off Newport Beach, California, where the seafloor drops from roughly 100 to 1,000 feet, holding a mix of slope and rockfish habitat. Vermilion and sunset rockfish are the mainstays, peaking February through March, April through June, and July through October, while aggregate rockfish stay reliable from March into October and lingcod move in from September through January. Anglers work the deeper edges with deep dropping using squid strips, shrimp flies, and salted anchovies for vermilion, and vertical jigging heavy iron jigs and swimbaits for lingcod along the canyon structure. Shallower reaches of the canyon produce ocean whitefish on dropper loop bait fishing with squid strips and cut mackerel from April and again July through October, plus California sheephead on bottom fishing with live shrimp and rock crab in spring and late summer. California halibut and barred sand bass hold on the sandier margins, with halibut best on drifted live anchovies and sardines from March through May and sand bass on drift fishing from May through July.
