Newport Canyon is a deep offshore feature off Santa Monica, California, dropping from 120 to 1,000 feet across steep structure that concentrates bottom fish and drifting bait. California Halibut peaks March through July, taken by drift fishing live anchovies, sardines, or smelt over the shallower reaches, while Lingcod holds along the deeper rock from September through February and responds to vertical jigging with metal jigs and leadhead jigs rigged with swimbaits. Rockfish stay catchable year-round on dropper loops baited with squid or cut mackerel, and Vermilion Rockfish work the same broken bottom. Barred Sand Bass move in from spring through summer, hitting drifted live anchovies and plastic swimbaits, and California Sheephead feed April through September on bottom-fished squid, shrimp, and cut mackerel. Ocean Whitefish round out the summer window from June through August, drawn to dropper-loop squid strips worked close to the canyon edges.
