Newport Submarine Canyon is an outer-exposed drop-off off Newport Beach, California, where a mixed bottom falls away through depths of 100 to 600 feet. The steep structure draws pelagic gamefish through summer, with Albacore Tuna peaking June through September, Yellowfin June through October, and Bluefin May through September, alongside spring and summer runs of California Barracuda from April through September and White Seabass from February through June. Bluefin respond to fly-lined live sardines, anchovies, and mackerel along the edge, while jigging with metal or flat-fall jigs works the deeper water. Albacore hold on live sardines and anchovies, with trolled feather jigs and cedar plugs covering ground between schools. Deeper on the rocky sections, Rockfish peak March through October on dropper-loop rigs baited with squid strips and mackerel chunks, and Lingcod move in September through January and take heavy iron jigs worked vertically.
