Catalina Island's West End is an outer-exposed rocky drop-off off Newport Beach, where the bottom falls from around 40 feet into deeper water past 200 feet. The structure holds Yellowtail, Bonito, and Calico Bass through their Apr–Aug peak, with White Seabass moving in from Feb–Jun and Rockfish spread across Mar–Oct before Lingcod take over from Sep–Jan. Yellowtail respond to live bait fishing with live sardines or mackerel along the edge, while yo-yo jigging with heavy iron reaches fish holding deeper on the rock. Calico Bass hold tight to the structure and take plastic swimbaits worked over the shallower ledges, and White Seabass come to live squid drifted near the bottom. Along the deeper stretches, dropper loop bait fishing with squid strips and anchovies covers the rockfish, and vertical jigging with heavy iron works the same ground for Lingcod later in the year.
