La Jolla Canyons is an outer-exposed drop-off off Newport Beach, California, where a mixed bottom falls away through depths of 180 to 900 feet. The steep structure holds White Seabass at their peak from February through June, California Halibut from March through May, and Yellowtail from April through August, while Rockfish work the deeper contours from March through October and Lingcod take over from September through January. Drifting live bait such as live anchovies or live sardines covers the halibut over the shallower edges, and live bait fishing with live squid or live mackerel targets seabass and yellowtail higher in the column. Deeper along the wall, dropper loop bait fishing with squid strips and mackerel chunks and vertical jigging with heavy iron jigs reach the rockfish and lingcod holding tight to the drop. California Sheephead peak March through April and July through September and respond to bottom fishing with squid strips or rock crab worked against the mixed structure.
