Swains Canyon is an offshore deepwater feature off Oceanside, California, dropping through depths of 2,175 to 2,385 feet. The canyon draws pelagic species through the warmer months, with yellowfin tuna and albacore tuna peaking from June through October and dorado following from July through October. Bigeye tuna, skipjack, bonito, mahi-mahi, and wahoo also move through the same offshore water. Yellowfin respond to live bait fishing with live sardines, anchovies, or mackerel, while trolling cedar plugs and feathers or working metal and flat-fall jigs covers water over the deep structure. Albacore hold to trolled feathers, cedar plugs, and skirted lures, and dorado take fly-lined live sardines and anchovies or surface iron cast across the break.
