Church Rock sits off Santa Monica, California, over reef and rocky structure in water running 30 to 150 feet. The site holds California Halibut and White Seabass through the spring into summer, both peaking March to July, while Yellowtail move in from May to October and Calico Bass fill out the season April to August. Halibut hold along the sandy edges and respond to drift fishing with live anchovies, sardines, or smelt, and White Seabass take live squid and sardines fished on the bottom. Yellowtail come to live sardines and mackerel or to heavy iron worked with a yo-yo retrieve, and Calico Bass hit swimbaits and soft plastic grubs on leadhead jigs around the kelp and rock. As the year turns, Lingcod take over from September through February, worked with metal jigs and leadhead swimbaits down on the structure, with California Sheephead available on bottom-fished squid and cut mackerel from April into September.
