The 182 Spot sits offshore of San Diego, California, over deep water running 600 to 2,400 feet, drawing pelagic species along the open bank. Pacific bluefin tuna anchor the season with a peak from April through September, while albacore and yellowfin tuna run strong from June through October and dorado turn on from July through October. Yellowtail hold from July through September, joined at times by wahoo, skipjack, striped marlin, and bigeye tuna. Anglers work bluefin here with kite fishing using flying fish, live mackerel, and yummy flyer, then drop to jigging with knife jigs or flat-fall jigs when the fish sound. Albacore and yellowfin respond to live bait such as sardines, anchovies, and mackerel, and floating kelp paddies over this deep water hold dorado for live sardines, live anchovies, and surface iron.
