STRUCTURE
Kelp Reef
Outer Exposed

The 270 Fathom Bank is an outer-exposed kelp reef off Santa Monica, California, where kelp-covered structure holds fish across a depth range of 20 to 60 feet. Yellowfin Tuna and Albacore Tuna peak from June through October, Pacific Bluefin Tuna from April through September, and Yellowtail from May through October, giving the bank a dense summer-to-fall run of pelagics. Live bait fishing with sardines, anchovies, and mackerel works the water column for Yellowfin and Yellowtail, while trolling cedar plugs and feather jigs covers ground for Albacore. Along the kelp edges, Calico Bass hold from April through August and respond to swimbaits and soft plastic grubs fished tight to the structure. Vermilion and Sunset Rockfish stay available year-round on the reef bottom, reached by deep dropping squid strips and shrimp flies.
