The Point Loma Kelp Beds form an outer-exposed kelp reef along the rocky San Diego coastline, with fishable structure running from 15 to 105 feet. The beds hold a strong mixed-species fishery: Yellowtail peak from April through September, White Seabass and Pacific Halibut load up in spring, California Halibut runs March through June, and Rockfish stack along the deeper edges from December through February and again May through October, while Calico Bass turn on in June and July. Anglers work the shallower rock and kelp margins with plastic swimbaits for Calico Bass and drift live anchovies or sardines across the sand channels for halibut. Live sardines, mackerel, and squid drifted near the kelp line take Yellowtail and White Seabass, while dropper loops with squid strips or shrimp flies fished along the deeper rock produce the Rockfish aggregate. Tides moving across the reef edges concentrate bait and pull predators into the upper water column on the stronger exchanges.
