STRUCTURE

The Whistler Buoy sits off Point Loma in San Diego, marking productive water that runs 60 to 110 feet deep over structure that holds fish through the year. California Halibut peak here from March through June, worked best by drifting live anchovies, sardines, or smelt across the bottom, with swimbaits as an alternative on the drift. Yellowtail move through from July into September and respond to live bait such as sardines, mackerel, and anchovies, with yo-yo jigging on heavy iron another way to reach fish holding deep. Calico Bass fill the June and July window, taking plastics on leadheads like swimbaits, grubs, and paddle tails fished tight to structure. The depth range and bottom relief at this spot reward matching your approach to the season and reading how the tide moves bait across the zone.
