The Point Loma Whistler Buoy sits off San Diego over open sand flats in 180 to 240 feet of water, an outer-exposed mark where current and depth concentrate fish across the seasons. California Halibut hold on the sand through their March to June peak, while White Seabass push through from March into July and provide a spring highlight. Summer shifts the focus to Barred Sand Bass from June to August, Calico Bass in June and July, and Sculpin from June through September, with Leopard Shark tracking the same June to September window along the bottom. Drift fishing with live anchovies, sardines, or swimbaits works the flats for halibut, and dropper loop rigs with squid strips and anchovies reach Sculpin holding deep. For White Seabass, live squid and live sardine fished on the drift match the depth and structure this exposed sand mark provides.
