Matia Island Kelp and Reef sits in DFO subarea 7 off Bellingham, Washington, where kelp beds and rocky bottom rise through water running 20 to 80 feet across an outer, exposed shoreline. The reef holds a strong groundfish population, with lingcod peaking November through February and again March through June, kelp greenling from June to December, and aggregate rockfish from March to September. Lingcod respond to jigging with leadhead jigs and swimbaits or metal jigs, while drifting live greenling or herring works the deeper edges of the structure. Rockfish and kelp greenling take metal jigs and soft plastics worked close to the rock, and cabezon hold to the same terrain from October through March. Chinook and coho salmon move through in summer, peaking June to September and June to October respectively, and downrigger trolling with whole herring, spoons, or hoochies covers the open water above the reef, while Pacific halibut drift the sand-and-rock margins from April to August.
