Coho Salmon Fishing in Bellingham, WA
52 spots · peak Jun-Oct
Coho build slowly through spring and early summer in Bellingham Bay, Samish Bay and the north Puget Sound, when resident feeder fish make up most of what you find. The run changes character in August as Fraser, Skagit and Nooksack-bound migrants stage in these waters. Late August through mid-September is the heart of it, with large schools holding in the bay before they push into the rivers. October drops off fast, and from December through April the saltwater fishery is effectively empty. Plan around June to October, and target the first half of September if you get to pick your dates.
Seven spots hold coho here. Alden Bank, Belle Rock, Hein Bank, Parker Reef, Partridge Bank, Point Lawrence and Thatcher Pass all give you structure and moving water to work.
Trolling is the main game. Run flashers with hoochies, trolling spoons or cut plug herring through the upper 30 to 60 feet around Bellingham Bay, Lummi Island and the San Juans. Drift mooching with whole or cut plug herring works the tide rips off Point Migley and Lummi Rocks. When bait balls up in the bay, cast and rip metal jigs through the surface-feeding schools. Fish the run of an ebb or flood at 0.6 knots or more and avoid dead slack. Go at first light or the last of the evening, in a wind wave under 5 feet and a tide swing of 5 to 10 feet.
When to go
Coho abundance in Bellingham-area waters (Bellingham Bay, Samish Bay, north Puget Sound) builds slowly through spring/summer as resident 'blackmouth'-style and feeder coho grow, ramps sharply in August as Fraser, Skagit, and Nooksack-bound migrants stage, and peaks late August through mid-September before fish push into the rivers. Tide, current and light
These are the conditions ReelCaster weights when it scores coho salmon at Bellingham spots, and they are the ones worth planning a trip around.
Watch the water temperature
Feeding holds up between about 9.25°C and 13.25°C. Local water sits inside that band most of the year, so it rarely decides a day on its own.
Fish moving water
Best once the tide is running at about 0.6 knots or more. The bite fades as the current drops away and dead slack is the worst of it, so plan the trip around the run of the ebb or the flood rather than the turn.
Go at first light
The bite is strongest with the sun low: from just before sunrise through the first couple of hours of daylight, and again as the light goes in the evening. Through the middle of a bright day it tails off, and scores follow it down.
Pick your sea state
Wind wave between about 0 and 5 feet is the productive band here; past that the day is about whether you can fish it at all.
Mind the size of the tide
A day's tide swing between about 5 and 10 feet is the productive band here; past that the day is about whether you can fish it at all.
