President Channel runs along the outer-exposed edge of Waldron Island near Friday Harbor, where a rock drop-off falls through depths of 60 to 240 feet. This structure holds aggregate rockfish, which peak from March through September. Anglers work the drop-off with jigging as the primary approach, running metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and swimbaits down along the rock. Bait fishing with herring, squid, or shrimp supports the effort, and mooching with herring or leadhead jigs covers the water column when fish sit off the bottom. The steep rock face and exposed setting keep the target species tight to structure across the deeper end of the range.
