Steamboat Island sits in the inner protected waters near Olympia, Washington, within DFO subarea 13, where a mixed-bottom drop-off falls through depths of 30 to 150 feet. The structure holds a rotating cast of salmon through the warmer half of the year: Chinook peak from June through September, Coho follow from July into October, and Chum move through from September into December. Trolling is the dominant approach across all three, working flashers, cut-plug herring, trolling spoons, and hootchies along the contour of the drop-off. Mooching whole or cut-plug herring accounts for Chinook and Coho holding tighter to the structure, while metal jigs worked along the slope produce when fish stack up on the edge. The site also supports Lingcod, Pacific Halibut, Rockfish, Pacific Cod, and Leopard Shark over its mixed bottom.
