Dungeness Spit / Flats

Dungeness Spit and its adjacent flats form an outer-exposed sand bottom off Port Angeles, Washington, where depths run from 5 to 40 feet across open, current-swept ground. The flats hold Dungeness Crab alongside a rotating cast of finfish, with Lingcod peaking January through April, Pacific Halibut March through August, and both Chinook and Coho Salmon moving through from June into September. Halibut come to drift fishing across the sand with herring, salmon bellies, octopus, or squid, while Lingcod respond to jigging with metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs over the same shallow ground. Chinook and Coho hold to trolling with whole herring, flashers, hootchies, and trolling spoons, with mooching cut-plug herring a workable alternative when fish sit deeper in the water column. Rockfish round out the mix on the exposed structure, taking metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and swimbaits worked near the bottom.
