Winter Hole is a mid-exposure drop-off off Port Angeles, Washington, where a mixed bottom falls away through depths of 80 to 180 feet. The break holds Pacific Halibut from March through August, with Chinook Salmon and Coho Salmon layering in over the summer, Chinook peaking June through August and Coho running June through September. Anglers work the deeper edges of the drop-off for halibut by drift fishing with herring, salmon bellies, octopus, or squid, or by jigging leadhead and metal jigs along the mixed bottom. Chinook and Coho respond to trolling with flashers, hootchies, trolling spoons, or whole herring through the mid-column, while mooching cut-plug herring covers the same water at a slower pace. The habitat's structure concentrates fish where the shallower shelf gives way to the drop, making the transition zone the focus across all three species.
