14 Mile Bank, also known as Lasuen Knoll, is an outer-exposed offshore drop-off roughly 14 miles off San Diego, where a mixed bottom rises from surrounding deep water into the 405 to 570 foot range. The bank draws pelagic species through the warm season, with Yellowtail peaking July through September, Dorado from July into October, Bluefin tuna from May through September, and Albacore Tuna running June through October. Striped marlin, Vermilion Rockfish, and both Blue and Mako Shark round out the mix over the structure. Yellowtail respond to live bait such as sardines, mackerel, and anchovies, with yo-yo jigging on heavy iron working the deeper edges of the drop. When kelp paddies drift across the bank, Dorado hold beneath them and take live sardines, live anchovies, or surface iron, while Bluefin come to kite fishing with flying fish and live mackerel over the same exposed water.
