277 Bank is an offshore deepwater feature southwest of Santa Monica, California, where the bottom drops from roughly 270 to 1,500 feet and draws pelagic fish through the warmer months. Yellowtail hold here from May through October, while Dorado run June through September and yellowfin and albacore tuna peak June through October, with striped marlin adding to the mix July through October. Yellowtail respond to live bait such as sardines, mackerel, and anchovies, and to yo-yo jigging with heavy iron worked down along the structure. Dorado gather under kelp paddies drifting over the deep water, where live sardines and anchovies or surface iron produce, and trolling cedar plugs and skirted lures covers ground between paddies. Albacore favor trolling with feather jigs and diving plugs across the open water, backed by live bait and heavy surface iron when fish come up.
