Poett Nook and San Mateo Bay form an inner, protected pocket of Barkley Sound near Bamfield, British Columbia, with a mixed bottom running from roughly 10 to 60 feet. Chinook Salmon move through from May into August, Coho Salmon hold from May through September, and Rockfish stay catchable across the same summer stretch. Trolling anchovy, herring, flashers, and hootchies covers the salmon along the sheltered depths, while mooching whole or cut-plug herring works the shallower edges when fish sit tight to structure. The mixed bottom suits jigging with metal jigs, leadhead jigs, or soft plastic swimbaits for Rockfish, and bottom fishing with cut herring, squid, or shrimp takes fish holding near the harder ground. The protected water keeps conditions workable through the peak salmon months.
