Swale Rock is a kelp-covered rocky reef off Bamfield, British Columbia, sitting in an outer, exposed stretch of water where depths run from 40 to 120 feet. The reef holds Chinook Salmon, which peak from May through August, and Coho Salmon, which peak from May through September. Trolling anchovy, herring, flashers, and hootchies covers the water column over the rock structure and remains the primary approach for Chinook, while mooching whole or cut-plug herring and jigging metal jigs work the deeper edges. For Coho, trolling hootchies, spoons, cut-plug herring, and flashers is the dominant method, with bucktailing flies near the surface and drift jigging over the reef as supporting tactics. The rock and kelp concentrate fish along the drop into deeper water, so working the 40-to-120-foot band over structure keeps baits in the strike zone.
