About Shelter Point Hump

Shelter Point Hump is a rocky pinnacle rising from the outer, exposed waters off Campbell River in DFO subarea 13-1, holding depths of 90 to 140 feet. The structure concentrates Lingcod, which peak in May and June and again from August through September, alongside a rockfish aggregate that includes Canary Rockfish and Pacific Cod. Anglers work the pinnacle for Lingcod with metal jigs, leadhead jigs and swimbaits, or bucktail jigs over the rock, supplementing with bait fishing using whole herring, live greenling, or octopus. Chinook Salmon move through from June to August and Coho from May to September, both taken by trolling anchovy, herring, spoons, flashers, or hootchies along the edges of the structure. The depth range and rock bottom favor tight jig presentations for bottom fish, while salmon trolling tracks the currents that funnel bait across the hump.
