About Wilby Shoals Hump

Wilby Shoals Hump is a rocky pinnacle in DFO subarea 13-1 off Campbell River, rising through outer, exposed water at depths of 25 to 40 feet. The structure holds Lingcod, which peak from May to June and again from August to September, alongside Black Rockfish that stay active through the May to September stretch, with Blue, China, and Copper Rockfish and Pacific Cod sharing the same rocky bottom. Anglers working the hump target Lingcod with metal jigs, leadhead jigs paired with swimbaits, and bucktail jigs, or switch to whole herring, live greenling, and octopus on bait; Black Rockfish take metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and soft plastic swimbaits over the pinnacle. Chinook Salmon move through from June to August and Coho from May to September, both taken by trolling anchovy, herring, spoons, and hootchies across the exposed edges of the shoal. The shallow rock and outer exposure keep this a jigging-focused spot, with the pinnacle concentrating fish where the structure breaks the current.
