Cape Lazo, known locally as the Comox Bar, is an exposed sand flat off the coast near Nanaimo, British Columbia, where depths run from 15 to 60 feet over open bottom. The flat holds Pacific Halibut through its peak from March to August, followed by Chinook and Coho Salmon that peak from June to September. Anglers targeting halibut work the sand with drift jigging, using leadhead jigs with soft plastics, metal jigs, or herring, and back it up with bait fishing whole herring, salmon bellies, octopus, or squid along the bottom. Salmon fishing centers on trolling anchovy, herring, flashers with hoochies, or trolling spoons across the flat, with mooching cut-plug herring a productive option for Chinook. The exposed outer setting and shallow sand structure keep both bait and predators moving through the water column across the tide.
