About Sandy Island

Sandy Island sits off Comox in DFO subarea 14-11, a sand-bottom drop-off with mid-range exposure and depths running from the surface down to 90 feet. Chinook Salmon peak here from June through August, while Coho Salmon hold from May into September, and both respond well to trolling spoons, hootchies, and anchovy or herring along the sloping edge. Lingcod work the structure through two windows, January to March and May to September, and take metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs fished close to the bottom. Black Rockfish concentrate over the drop-off from June through August, where jigging with metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and soft plastic swimbaits covers the water column. The break between the shallows and the deeper sand shelf is the feature to target, working jigs down the slope and trolling the contour where salmon stage.
